The main advantage of modified atmospheres is their low environmental impact and the safety during the application, since they control insects without appealing to chemical insecticides.

A high hermeticity of the enclosure is required to control all insect stages.

For this reason, this method is not very widespread today, except for some particular cases such as organic grain production.
